The research, jointly supported by the Australia-American Educational Foundation and the Australian Institute of Criminology, was conducted in Australia during March and April of 1987.
The project included visits to the state police forces of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia.
Community satisfaction with police has been consistently high over the past decade. Based on data from the National Survey of Community Satisfaction with Policing, the figure below reports overall trends in satisfaction. There have been changes in the methodology of the survey which could affect responses and in 2000-01 the survey was not released. Prior to 2001 the survey interviewed those aged 18 years and older; since 2001 the sample has included those aged 15 years and over.
In response to escalating burglary rates in the Australian Capital Territory, the Australian Federal Police has, over recent years, introduced a series of crime reduction strategies in Canberra. These operations have been effective in achieving a short-term reduction in burglary rates, but the number of burglaries has risen again after the cessation of the operation (though not to pre-operation rates).
There has been considerable media coverage about the negative outcomes associated with the abuse of alcohol and inhalants in Indigenous communities. Police in remote areas have also been concerned about the extent to which illicit drug use is having a negative impact in these communities. In 2005, the National Drug Law Enforcement Research Fund commissioned research into the policing implications of such use in rural and remote Australia.
