New AIC research on women trafficked into cyber-scam centres in South-East Asia

The Australian Institute of Criminology has published new research examining the experiences of women trafficked into cyber-scam centres in South-East Asia, showing:

  • Women and girls are deceptively recruited into cyber-scam centres predominantly through someone they know using strategies that exploit relational trust.

  • Cyber-scam centres reproduce patriarchal structures and practices to enable their key operations and coerce the compliance of women, including forcing women to undertake domestic and administrative tasks alongside scamming, and using threats of sexual violence.

  • Gender-responsive approaches are imperative for addressing the complex and multiple forms of exploitation that women experience while inside cyber-scam centres and post-release.
