Data from the 2023–24 Fraud Against the Commonwealth census show that:
- There were 288,808 allegations of internal and external fraud against the Commonwealth. Ninety-five percent of allegations related to external fraud.
- The top target of internal fraud was program information and the top targets of external fraud were program payments, such as fraudulent claims, and the misuse of payments or services.
- Commonwealth entities reported internal fraud losses of $2,397,401 and external fraud losses of $104,518,392 in 2023–24. Commonwealth entities reported greater internal fraud and lower external fraud recoveries in 2023–24 than in the previous financial year.
